Job purpose 

To assist the Extended Leadership member in charge of Sixth Form. This will include taking ownership of the specific responsibilities listed below and deputising for the Head of Sixth Form in all aspects of their work when they are absent. 

Promoting Student Progress

  • oversee student attendance to lessons and intervene with students who have poor attendance. 
  • support the Extended Leadership member in charge of Sixth Form in the use of performance data to understand student progress and to inform student curriculum target setting
  • monitor, support and extend our most able students 
  • support the Head of Sixth Form in supporting standards of well-being and managing of behaviour issues across the sixth form 
  • monitor and manage the Sixth form’s involvement in enrichment activities ensuring a balanced programme and equality of opportunity for all students
  • liaise with the YTL of year 11 to promote the 6th form as the number one option post KS4 and retain our existing HPAs. 


Monitoring of teaching and learning to promote best practice

  • in conjunction with the Extended Leadership member in charge of Sixth Form routinely monitor the teaching of the year group ensuring that best practice is shared including promoting independent study skills and positive attitudes to learning.
  • liaise with the Assistant Head with oversight of form time and oversee the RSHE programme, including planning, reviewing and updating the programme each year and ensuring that it is delivered effectively by the team

Pastoral responsibilities

  • oversee attendance and punctuality for tutorials, study periods, ensuring the effective implementation of appropriate follow up procedures and sanctions for non-attendees.
  • lead on the Sixth form tutor time curriculum and schedule of activities and assemblies
  • develop positive links with universities. 
  • Oversee the Sixth Form volunteering and leadership programme
  • liaise with the Extended Leadership member in charge of Sixth Form to ensure implementation of a leadership programme which will improve the skills of Sixth Form students and develop their sense of care for other members of our community
  • lead on the writing of UCAS references by form tutors and associated subject teachers ensuring that deadlines are met and the references are of a consistently high quality. 
  • collect and collate predicted grades for UCAS
  • organise and run the Next Steps evening for Year 12 and 13 for students and parents. 
  • organise and run UCAS Induction days, liaising with outside speakers and universities. 
  • organise UCAS training for form tutors and subject teachers
  • support the Head of Sixth Form in monitoring and assisting students in their UCAS application process including those who go through the 'clearing’ process. 
  • encourage and oversee student applications for apprenticeships. 
  • attend all events associated with the 6th form including Welcome Evenings, SPE and results days,
  • support the Head of Sixth Form in the organisation and delivery of sixth form assemblies in accordance with the whole school procedures
  • support the Head of Sixth Form in promoting the sixth form to ensure retention of existing year 11 students and the recruitment of external applicants
  • support the Head of Sixth Form in aspects of the application procedure to the sixth form
  • support the Head of Sixth Form in planning appropriate Induction arrangements for sixth form students

Accountability to Line Manager, Headteacher and Governing Body

  • prepare for and meet regularly with the Extended Leadership member in charge of Sixth Form 
  • in consultation with the Extended Leadership member in charge of Sixth Form determine an annual development plan for Year 12 and 13 that takes into account both school and year group priorities, and which is reviewed regularly
  • participate in the performance development process and act upon its outcomes as appropriate
  • provide information for whole school documents (improvement plan, pastoral reviews)

Maintain a supportive working environment

  • serve as a role model for other members of the year team
  • lead, support and guide other members of the year team, acting as a coach where appropriate
  • support the Head of Sixth Form in establishing clear expectations and positive working relationships among the year team through mutual support and team work
  • develop effective working relationships with the Headteacher, Leadership Team, subject staff and other staff at the school
  • have oversight of the form class tutor rooms to create a year group identity
  • support the Head of Sixth Form in creating a climate which enables staff to develop and maintain positive attitudes towards tutoring and their tutor group, and confidence in their role as a tutor.
  • prepare for and contribute to pastoral meetings
  • in conjunction with the Extended Leadership member in charge of Sixth Form be involved in the strategic direction, leadership and management of the Sixth Form and the development and implementation of policies, plans, targets and practices within the context of the school’s vision.

Promoting the ethos of the school

  • share the work of the year team with parents, colleagues and other stakeholders
  • promote consultation about the work of the school with students, parents and other stakeholders and ensure that issues raised are acknowledged and acted on
  • embed a safeguarding culture in all aspects of life at Whitefield School
