Job overview

Are you an outstanding teacher and leader, with a strong commitment to addressing educational disadvantage? Can you inspire and motivate others to get behind your vision? If so, we have an exciting role to share with you!

The role

Director of Learning – or ‘DoL’ – is the title we use at KAA for ‘Head of Year’. The term ‘Director’ reflects the seniority of the position, and that it sits on the leadership scale. The term ‘Learning’ speaks to the strategic focus which the role has.

DoLs are responsible for all matters relating to the achievement, attendance, safety and behaviour of their year group. They provide effective leadership to their team of form tutors, and the students themselves. They set a clear vision for their year group and inspire others to get on board with this vision.

In the larger year groups of Y7-11, DoLs work in pairs, as ‘Co-DoLs’. In Sixth Form, there is one DoL per year group. There is no difference in terms of contracts or timetables between DoLs and Co-DoLs.

With a team of 12 DoLs in total, we anticipate opportunities in different key stages. Applicants can specify a preference for which year or key stage they wish to work with or apply generally. There is no advantage to either approach.

What we’re looking for

You will be an exceptional teacher and leader in your own right, able to coach and develop those around you. You will have strong professional knowledge and experience, and be able to think strategically about the most complex problems the school faces. You will be highly skilled at managing challenging student behaviour, with strong professional knowledge around behaviour, SEND and safeguarding. You will either currently be working at a leadership level and looking for a new challenge, or an experienced teacher ready to take the next step.

What KAA offers

The successful candidate will be joining a team that is firmly committed to making KAA one of the best academies in the UK. The value of being part of a great team should never be underestimated. Being a DoL at KAA means you will be joining a supportive and talented group that will invest in your professional development and growth as a leader.

This role will be excellent preparation for progressing to SLT in future, and previous DoLs have gone on to become highly effective APs and VPs at this school and elsewhere. In addition to the outstanding training and support we offer, there is a wide range of other benefits to working at KAA (including a two-week October half-term, and 180 as opposed to 190 school days). Full details can be found on the recruitment pages of our website.

Application process

The deadline for applications is 9am on Thursday 3rd October 2024.

About Kensington Aldridge Academy (KAA)

KAA is an 11 – 18 academy situated in the heart of Notting Hill. We opened in brand new buildings in 2014 with just Year 7 and our facilities are second to none. We are now in our ninth year of operation and are a full school with 1,250 students in Years 7 to 13.

KAA has grown to become one of the top academies in the UK. Our Ofsted report grades us outstanding in all categories and describes standards as “exceptional”. In 2018 we were awarded TES Secondary School of the Year, and our 2022 Good Schools Guide review praises the “phenomenal” education students receive.

Why work for KAA?

Making a real difference

KAA pursues the very highest standards in education, both inside the classroom and beyond. We believe all children can achieve good results, irrespective of their prior attainment or experiences. 60% of our students qualify for the Pupil Premium, but with our help they can overcome the barriers that relative poverty can create. Our ethos, spirit and commitment to ever-extending student achievement make KAA an incredible place to work and learn.

Unrivalled professional development

KAA is a high-performing environment where staff at all levels feel challenged and supported to achieve their professional goals. As you will see in our Ofsted report, CPD in our school is of an “exceptional” standard and is an ongoing focus for all staff. There are few better places to develop your skills as a teacher than here with us in Kensington.

Being valued

We invest in our staff and offer unique benefits, including: 180 school days (as opposed to the 190 other schools have); 15 training days (as opposed to 5); free breakfast and lunch for all staff everyday; a two-week half term in October; free staff exercise and well-being sessions, and much more.
