Job overview

The role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Teacher of Business and Economics to assume a leadership role as Head of this thriving department.

You will lead, manage and develop the Business and Economics department and curriculum, managing a strong departmental team that strives for excellence in teaching and learning. You will undertake operational and strategic planning on behalf of the department, by formulating, maintaining and developing objectives and plans that support pupil needs and underpin the strategic plans of the school.

In addition to this, you will also plan, prepare and deliver engaging lessons, as well as play a key role in the wider life of the school through co-curricular activities and outreach programmes.

About you

We are looking for an experienced teacher with an excellent track record of Business and Economics teaching at secondary level, who has some experience of management (albeit not necessarily as a Head of Department). You will need to be an accomplished teacher who can deliver enthusiastic and engaging lessons, using your strong subject knowledge to inspire students.

Working at Emanuel

There is a genuine buzz at the school. Colleagues enjoy their work and, like the pupils, are ambitious for the school.

Everyone works hard here, and anyone joining the school should expect to do so. There’s a strong sense of community and source of friendship. From the briefing to all staff, to the half termly staff meetings, termly consultative group meetings and a common room committee, there’s ongoing dialogue about the school’s aims.

We aim to look after our staff too. We have an appraisal scheme with a focus on the employee’s professional development; we sponsor postgraduate courses and a range of training opportunities; we offer a healthcare plan via Simply Health that includes counselling and medical support; and we’re committed to supporting staff wellbeing. On a more practical level, all staff benefit from good pension provision and free lunches.

About Emanuel School

“The school whole-heartedly fulfils its aims to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in its pupils.”

ISI Inspection Report April 2023

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.

At the heart of our school is a positive and welcoming culture. We are fortunate to have a committed and talented group of colleagues, people who recognise the importance of everyone at the school having a varied working life, a sense of personal growth and shared enjoyment. We wish you the best of luck with your application.
