We are looking to appoint an inspirational Head of Department to lead a talented and high-performing English department.

The person would be responsible for outcomes across all three key stages and for ensuring the high-quality implementation of our exceptional English curriculum. The successful applicant would work closely with the Key Stage Co-ordinators in the department, as well as the SLT link in order to continue striving to make the department the best it can be.

Essential skills required for this role would include:

  • Have strong leadership qualities, with the ability to lead and motivate a team;
  • Be strategic in making decisions which drive progress across all 3 key stages;
  • Be able to analyse data and use this to accelerate progress;
  • Be an outstanding classroom practitioner;
  • Be adaptable, and able to respond to emerging needs and priorities;
  • Have excellent communication with staff, parents and pupils.

The post holder would be required to lead a large, high performing team, and maintain the smooth running of the department. As part of a successful trust, there are opportunities for wider professional development for the right candidate.

St Mary's College is a Catholic Secondary School and Sixth Form situated in the city of Hull.

The school’s mission statement is educate students spiritually, morally, physically and academically to make them well-rounded human beings. St Mary’s College believes every student has the right to a full and exciting education. The school curriculum is rooted in the faith, practice and moral teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.

St Mary’s College's sporting achievements have set it apart from other schools and its facilities have helped many pupils get involved with sports. Various extracurricular activities are also offered to pupils, from Budding Entrepreneur club to Backstage club. St Mary’s status as an International School has helped it foster a cultural and community feel. From the Green Generation project with Slovenia to an ICT project with Kenya and Nigeria, international schemes help to teach pupils about other cultures.
