Island School is looking to appoint a full-time Head of Languages to start in August 2025 at our recently relocated new campus located at Mid-levels, Hong Kong. The teacher will carry the teaching and learning responsibilities (TLR2) within the language faculty.
Island School is a highly successful IB secondary school located in the heart of Hong Kong. Over 1300 students aged 11 to 18 study an innovative and exciting curriculum combining our self-designed courses, the MYP, IGCSE, and IB programs.
The role of the Head of Languages at Island School is to lead a dynamic team of teachers and educational assistants in Mandarin, Spanish and Japanese. The faculty delivers MYP, IGCSE and IB Diploma courses in all of these languages.
All TLR responsibility holders have a teaching responsibility and are layered on top of a main scale teacher’s job description.
Responsibilities
Curriculum Management:
- Develop and manage the faculty’s written and taught curriculum
- Ensure academic standards are met and maintained within the faculty
Faculty Management And Monitoring:
- Lead, develop, and support a productive and positive team of language educators
- Conduct effective meetings, providing agendas and minutes
- Facilitate communication within the faculty and with the broader school community
- Support and manage the work of all support staff in the faculty
- Inform the Vice Principal of relevant faculty issues
- Monitor and evaluate teaching and learning quality, adhering to school expectations
- Implement the school assessment policy effectively
- Analyze examination results and report outcomes to the Principal and relevant stakeholders
- Ensure an optimal learning environment and manage faculty resources efficiently
- Collaborate with the timetable team and the Examinations Officer regarding examination entries
Faculty Development:
- Support student development and achievement within the faculty
- Develop and implement a faculty plan aligned with the School Development Plan
- Lead initiatives to improve teaching and learning practices
- Oversee the Professional Reflection and Development (PRD) process within the faculty
- Identify and plan professional development opportunities for faculty staff
School Development:
- Actively promote and implement agreed school policies and a cohesive school vision
- Collaborate with the Curriculum Leaders’ group to innovate and implement whole school priorities
- Contribute to the professional development program at both the school and foundation levels
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education, or
- Bachelor’s Degree in any subject and a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate of Education) or equivalent
- Fluency in at least one foreign language taught by the faculty
- Proven teaching experience within a recognized educational organization, preferably within an international or IB school setting
- Previous leadership experience in an educational setting is preferred
- Strong understanding of current pedagogy, with excellent practice exemplified in own teaching
- Strong leadership and organisational skills with the accountability to line manage the team
- Competent in making difficult decisions and taking necessary actions
- Capable of efficient planning and change management
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively as part of a team
- Ability to inspire and motivate staff and students
- Proficient and experienced in utilizing data analysis and learning technologies
- Commitment to contribute to the extra-curricular activities of the school
- Commitment to fostering an active and creative learning environment
- Commitment to professional development and collaboration across the school
