About Settlebeck School

Settlebeck School is a smaller than average secondary school serving a wide rural area from Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales, to the town of Kendal in The Lake District and many villages and hamlets in between. We are a thriving community that promotes the highest levels of academic and personal achievement for our students.

We are active members of the South Lakes Federation and The South Lakes Rural Partnership, which provide many learning opportunities for our students and staff, within and beyond Settlebeck School itself. Our class sizes are small, all students are known to each other and to all the staff.

We were judged to be Good with many outstanding features in our most recent inspection. This reflects the high academic standards our students achieve and the excellent specialist teaching from highly qualified and experienced staff. The individual knowledge we have of each of our students and the support and care that we provide results in our students achieving to the best of their potential. Settlebeck is consistently in the top few comprehensive schools in Cumbria for P8 measures.

Sedbergh is a small, friendly market town in a beautiful setting at the foot of the Howgill Fells. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and the name is a derivative of the Norse ‘Set Berg’, meaning ‘flat-topped hill’.

Sedbergh is situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, conveniently located just 10 minutes from J37 of the M6.

Ofsted

“The curriculum is extremely creative, is broad and balanced and caters particularly well for individual student’s needs. It prepares them well for the next stages of their education and for later life. Mixed-age classes, early entry for examinations and creative use of skilled specialist staff all combine to give students in this very small academy an amazingly wide choice of courses so that all students, including the most able, thrive. A wide range of enrichment activities and practical courses add to students’ enjoyment of learning. They spoke enthusiastically about varied activities such as kayaking on the local river, orienteering on the fells, performing in dramatic productions and cooking tasty food on their catering course”.
