At King Ethelbert school we are committed to ensuring that all students achieve their full potential. We have a dedicated team consisting of our SENDCO, two deputy SENDCOs, intervention coordinators and classroom TAs. We believe that all teachers are responsible for supporting students with SEN. Our team work hard to ensure we support teachers in the classroom, and students to overcome their challenges, whatever they are.

We support students with a broad range of needs, and our intervention coordinators in particular support students in the following areas:

  • Literacy
  • Speech and Language
  • ASC / ADHD / ADD
  • SEMH / Anxiety

The Role

The job involves supporting students to develop their literacy skills mainly through interventions, as well as some in-class support. We use IDL for students to independently work on their literacy at their own level and pace, and you will be responsible for overseeing this, making sure that baseline assessments are completed, and that regular assessments occur to measure progress. You will also run reading groups to develop confidence and fluency in reading. At times you will be required to support students in class, supporting through reading and scribing. You will also be a designated key worker for students who will check in with you in the mornings and after school. You will work within the SEN team, and will be managed by the SENDCO / Deputy SENDCOs.

About you:

The right candidate will be committed to improving the educational outcomes of our students, regardless of their special educational needs. You’ll have a good understanding of different SEN needs. You will be organised and will be able to schedule and report on assessments in good time. You will also be able to work as part of a close team of colleagues who often need to work flexibly to ensure we are supporting students throughout the school day. You will need to have good communication, numeracy and literacy skills, and will be able to relate well to young people and adults alike.

Main Responsibilities

1. To help identify students in need of support and intervention, and to organise and run a programme of interventions for these students.

2. To collect assessment data for students, to report this back to the SENDCO/Deputy SENDCOs in time for review meetings, and to highlight any concerns relating to students not making progress to the SENDCO.

3. To support teachers in the classroom at times, and be aware of the class’ individual needs and differences to ensure all students have equal access to opportunities to learn

and develop.

4. To assist teaching staff with learning activities, ensuring health and safety and good behaviour of students, as scheduled by the SENCo and/or SENCo Assistant/s.

5.To support on trips as required.

6. To act as a key worker, by negotiation, for individual students, and to meet these students regularly to ensure their needs are being met.

7. To run small group and 1-2-1 intervention sessions for students as required, and to track and record their progress.

8. To work 1:1 with other students with learning difficulties and/or physical needs when required.

9. To undertake basic record keeping/sharing in respect of student learning, behaviour management, child protection etc, as directed in order to support the teacher to deliver specific learning programmes set for each child.

10. To be aware of and comply with school policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security and confidentiality reporting all concerns to an appropriate person to ensure students’ wellbeing.

11. To contribute to the overall work/aims of the school and appreciate and support the role of colleagues and other professionals to enable the school to fulfil its development plans etc.

12. To undertake training and other learning activities and attend relevant meetings (within contracted hours) as required to ensure own continuing professional development.

13. To participate in the school’s annual system of performance management.

14. To be alert to the health and safety of the working environment and to advise the head of department of any health and safety concerns.

15. To undertake any other reasonable duties as may be deemed necessary by the line manager/and or Headteacher.

16. To be a positive, proactive member of the SEND team carrying out both individual and team duties as directed by the SENCO.
