Job overview

The School

This is a very exciting time to be joining Durham International School Kenya. Since it opened in January 2021, Durham Kenya has exceeded expectations. It has captured the imagination of families - local and international alike - who are seeking a high-quality UK school education in Nairobi, one that goes out of it's way to create a family feel and an environment where children and young people are able to flourish. Durham Kenya delivers a UK curriculum, IGCSE and A Level, and there are currently over 40 nationalities enrolled.

Durham Kenya is operated in partnership with Durham School UK, one of the UK's oldest schools and a member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) and the HMC, the professional association of the Heads of the world's leading independent schools. Durham Kenya is an accredited member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) and a member of the Kenya Association of International Schools (KAIS).

The next bold and exciting stage of the School's expansion is the planned opening in September 2025 of a new purpose-built campus which will house the Upper Prep School and the Senior School.

About the Role

Innovative and enthusiastic teachers and leaders, committed to achieving the highest standards of teaching and learning, are at the heart of our learning community, providing the framework for every student's academic, social, emotional and physical development.

This is an exciting opportunity for a current or aspiring middle leader who has both vision and an eye for the detail required in founding a new school - someone prepared to see the big picture and who can roll up their sleeves and get things done. The founding period will require resilience, perseverance, agile thinking and a blend of conviction and open-mindedness.

About Durham International School Kenya

Durham International School Kenya is a highly successful, growing school with a committed and inspirational team of teaching professionals at its heart.

The School delivers the UK National Curriculum, IGCSE and A Level. As the first branch of a British School to open in East Africa, we are a sister school of Durham School UK and enjoy a long legacy of education excellence stretching back 600 years to the founding of Durham School in 1414.

Now entering its 5th year of providing academic excellence to families in Nairobi, Durham Kenya has established itself as a school that delivers a high-quality UK  education where all our students flourish and which provides teachers with exciting and rewarding careers.

Educational Ethos

Our core values of Moral Integrity, Ambition, Responsibility and Kindness underpin all our teaching and learning at Durham. We aim to develop a love of lifelong learning coupled with a culture of perseverance in the face of challenge so that students can flourish emotionally, socially, academically and physically. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves, think critically, explore different ways of doing things, reflect on their learning, collaborate and be a team player.

We believe this is fundamental in developing a child’s sense of well-being, nurturing their resilience, self-esteem, sense of respect for others and sense of social responsibility.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to provide students with a rounded education; one which inspires and nurtures a love of lifelong learning, an aspiration for achievement, respect for others, and ‘Confidence for Life’.

Our Aims

Within a community shaped by moral integrity and kindness, Durham Kenya aims to cultivate responsibility, respect and ambition to ensure that every student can thrive, be happy and make a positive mark in the world.

The three pillars of a Durham School which support this aim and shape the environment where students can learn and grow are:

Academic challenge: providing students a lifelong appetite for learning

Pastoral care: supporting students emotional, moral and spiritual strength

Co-curricular opportunities: providing opportunities to enrich and develop the individual, fostering collaboration, teamwork and leadership.

We do this by nurturing and supporting our students to become:

  • Thinkers who can research, evaluate, innovate, solve and create both collaboratively and independently
  • Individuals who are reflective, emotionally resilient, and effective communicators
  • Global citizens who act with responsibility and humility and are ready to make a positive contribution to society

We are currently seeking world-class teachers and leaders who have excellent knowledge and experience of teaching the UK curriculum and are committed to achieving the highest standards of teaching and learning. If you have resilience, perseverance, agile thinking and a blend of conviction and open-mindedness, we invite you to submit your application to join our founding staff team for September 2025.
