Seeking applications for a new member on the Supervisory Board of The British School of Amsterdam.

The British School of Amsterdam is a leading, international school in The Netherlands, based in Amsterdam. The Supervisory Board is the governing body and has responsibility for the strategic direction of the school.  As Supervisory Board members reach the end of their tenures, the Supervisory Board periodically reaches out to ask for nominations for new members, and we are now seeking applications for one of the positions on the Supervisory Board.

In accordance with the Articles of Association of The BSA, the Supervisory Board must comprise at least seven members, a majority of whom are independent members (i.e. not parents at the school). The chairperson must be an independent member (not a parent), and there must be at least one member who is a UK education specialist.  

Current members have a background and expertise in a number of specialist areas including education, finance, legal, marketing, communications, human resources, and employee relations. The Supervisory Board is currently looking for candidates who will ideally have a background and strong track record in finance. 

Background information on the School

The British School of Amsterdam (The BSA) is a non-selective, non-profit, independent school, and is a member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS). The school broadly follows the National Curriculum for England. High quality teaching and learning, top-level pastoral care, and extra-curricular provision, lie at the very heart of the School. The BSA is established as a Stichting (Foundation) and is governed by the Supervisory Board. The BSA receives no funding from the UK or Dutch governments.

Background on The Supervisory Board

The Supervisory Board has responsibility for the strategic direction of the school, and ensures that the school meets all its obligations under Dutch law and BSO standards. Its responsibilities include the appointment of the Management Board (comprising School Principal and Bursar) and the approval of all school strategies, relevant policies, major investments, the budget, and financial statements.   

The Supervisory Board meets at least four times during the academic year and has a number of working groups and committees which meet three times per year or as required.  Members of the Supervisory Board also meet regularly with the Parents’ Organisation Committee (POC) and the Works Council (OR). 

Key responsibilities of Supervisory Board members

  • contribute to the strategic development of the school
  • supervise key decisions and recommendations of the Management Board (Principal and Bursar)
  • join and play an active role in one or more working groups, advising the rest of the Supervisory Board on relevant strategic issues
  • approve spending and investments in accordance with the Articles of Association
  • approve and if necessary challenge or advise on the strategy of the school
  • coach and support the Management Board
  • always act in accordance with the interests of the Foundation and its schools
  • adhere to the Code of Conduct and Articles of Association

Profile

  • relevant degree-level qualification 
  • at least 10 years' relevant experience ideally in a senior leadership role 
  • strong interest in international education and the aims of the school
  • willing and able to invest time to attend Supervisory Board meetings, working group meetings and ad hoc meetings
  • fluent in English
  • located within commutable distance of the school

Employees and close relatives of employees of The BSA are excluded from becoming members of the Supervisory Board.
