Job overview

Elstree School is looking to appoint a Matron with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work alongside our boarding House Team. Our Matrons are non-residential roles and are pivotal to the success of the boarding experience at Elstree. This is a part time role for 10 hours per week, 2.30pm – 8.30pm on Tuesdays, 4.30pm - 8.30pm on Thursdays. Term time plus INSET and additional days at the start/end of each term to prepare the boarding house.

As a Matron, your warm and empathetic personality, tactful manner and good listening skills will be essential to build harmonious relationships with all pupils, staff and parents. Your excellent communication skills and ‘can do’ attitude will take our boarding provision beyond outstanding. Discretion and confidentiality are paramount with this role as is a genuine understanding of the needs of children.

You will need to be computer literate and ideally hold an up to date first aid qualification. Training will be given in child protection, safeguarding, dispensing medicines and on our IT systems.

Set in 150 acres of stunning parkland in rural West Berkshire, Elstree welcomes boys and girls aged 3-13 years. Originally founded in 1848, we moved to our current location in 1939 and opened our Pre-Prep school in 1993. We offer boarding, both flexi and weekly, from Year 4 onwards.

Elstree is a close community, and we pride ourselves on the very special, warm environment that has evolved since our inception, influenced largely by the family principles of Elstree School. We understand each parent’s desire for their child to feel happy and secure and consider our role in the children’s development and happiness to be a very privileged one. Our committed, energetic and enthusiastic staff look forward to working in partnership with parents throughout their child’s time at Elstree. All children are valued as individuals and are encouraged to explore and develop their talents to the full.

We offer a supportive and professional workplace with excellent terms, conditions and benefits.

To apply, please complete the attached application form or download an application pack from our website and email it to apply@elstreeschool.org.uk. If you require further information, please call Rachel Pither, Head of HR on 0118 971 0604. Whilst applications are welcomed from all interested candidates, please note that there is a genuine occupational requirement for the Matron to fulfil girls’ boarding and pastoral needs.

Applicants are encouraged to apply at their earliest convenience as applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Suitable candidates may be interviewed before the closing date, and we reserve the right to withdraw the position if an early appointment is made. The final date for receipt of applications is Midday on Friday 6th September.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Applicants must undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and Disclosure and Barring Service. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975, 2013 and 2020

Elstree is an award-winning independent day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 3 -13 years, just over an hour outside of London in rural Berkshire.

Set in 150 acres of beautiful grounds, Elstree offers a secure and stimulating environment for children to be nurtured and inspired.

Elstree provides a first-class education within a distinctive warm and friendly atmosphere. Proud of its rich history and reputation as a school with high academic, creative and sporting achievements, pupils from Elstree gain places to some of the country’s top Senior Schools, including Eton, Radley, Bradfield, Marlborough, Winchester and Wellington.

Elstree is large enough to accommodate two state of the art Science laboratories, a new Music School, full size all-weather pitch, outdoor pool, woodland for outdoor learning, and a lake for kayaking, yet with a total intake of around 275, Elstree is small enough to be personal and family-focused.

Elstree retains its traditional values whilst fully embracing today’s thinking and aims to help pupils realise their full potential with the encouragement and support of dedicated staff, excellent pastoral care and a full array of extra-curricular programmes, for which Elstree is renowned.
