Job overview

Our School

A recognised leader in the field of girls’ independent boarding education, St Mary’s Calne has approximately 360 girls aged 11-18, including 120+ girls in the Sixth Form. Results in public examinations are consistently excellent, with almost all of the girls going on to university, several each year to Oxbridge, to read a wide variety of subjects. As well as innovative teaching, learning and scholarship, St Mary’s offers outstanding pastoral care and a vibrant, warm community.

The Role

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic, enthusiastic person to work within the framework of an outstanding and highly motivated pastoral team. St Mary’s is fully committed to the provision of a full boarding school education. Boarding arrangements are structured horizontally; the girls live within their own year group. The quality of the care and support the girls receive from the pastoral staff is of critical importance to the school’s success. Our House Staff members are particularly skilful in finding the balance between pastoral support and discipline.

The full time Pastoral Assistant will be an energetic person who will inspire and engage sympathetically with young people. They will be a vital member of the Pastoral Team: assisting in the boarding Houses during the week and at weekends; participating in extra-curricular activities and generally complementing the pastoral care given by each House Team. Our pupils’ success in acquiring new abilities, skills and understanding depends crucially upon the quality of the staff with whom they engage.

Responsibilities, alongside other members of the House teams, are to ensure the welfare of the students and to enhance their pastoral experience. The role offers 30 hours per week (during 35 term time weeks per year). Hours are flexible dependent on the needs of the school each week, and will include two full day shifts with the Sixth Form year groups, plus some evening and weekend hours with younger ages. This results in a varied and rewarding role, suiting someone who would like to fully immerse themselves in the vibrant life of a boarding school.

Primarily attached to the boarding Houses, the Pastoral Assistant may also be expected to contribute to the wider school life, such as working with student related administrative teams if required, so good IT knowledge and an organised outlook would be an advantage.

The salary is based on 35 working weeks per year plus an allocation of statutory holiday pay entitlement (you are not required to work any holiday weeks unless in rare circumstances which would be discussed beforehand, or possibly in the run up to the start of the academic year). The full time salary is currently £25,166, or £14,500 when pro-rated.

St Mary’s Calne is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils. Due to the nature of the work involved, the successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS clearance prior to commencement of work.

St Mary’s offers benefits, including:

  • for a nominal fee, membership of the St Mary’s Sports Centre covering pool use, gym use and a wide variety of fitness classes
  • generous pension scheme
  • staff discount on fees for daughters educated at St Mary’s (and for sons and daughters educated at St Margaret’s Preparatory school)
  • free membership to an employee assistance programme (health, wellbeing and financial support)
  • paid breaks for pastoral staff
  • free meals during term time
  • free onsite parking

About St Mary's Calne

St Mary’s Calne is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18, a happy, purposeful and flourishing community of around 360 pupils with a 80% to 20% boarding to day ratio.

Founded in 1873, the school has been providing an outstanding education for girls for 150 years, and our alumnae have prominent positions in every profession from the law, politics and medicine to the arts, drama and sport. There is a strong tradition of the core academic subjects and strength in science and mathematics, as well as modern languages, arts and humanities.

Our Sixth Form is flourishing and highly successful, with over 120 girls. The girls benefit from exceptional careers advice and work hard to achieve their goals. Their academic results are outstanding and the girls go on to study at top UK and American universities; the striking range of courses they embark upon shows the wealth of choice available to our pupils. Many of the Sixth Form also undertake extensive pieces of independent research in the form of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), with 100% achieving A*s last year.

Located near the market town of Calne and amidst the natural beauty of the Wiltshire Downs, we are also within easy reach of the university towns of Bath, Bristol and Oxford and just over an hour by train from London. Our ideal location means that our girls benefit from a huge range of curriculum-enhancing opportunities as well as extra-curricular ones.

ISI May 2017:  Under the new ISI framework in both quality of Pupil Achievement and Pupil Development St Mary’s was awarded the highest possible grade – Excellent.  In addition, St Mary’s was found to be robustly compliant with all the ISI statutory standards in the Focused Compliance Inspection.

Our strategic plans for the next few years include the following:

  • To build on and develop a high expectation and success culture amongst pupils and staff.
  • To continue to develop and strengthen a fully integrated education for each girl which responds to her individual needs.
  • To develop a cutting edge curriculum and extra-curriculum that anticipates and responds to the needs of the workplace and life in the 21st century and allows girls to develop their agility of mind, their independence in learning and their adaptability.
  • To develop school structures, systems and facilities to support and enable our curriculum aims.
  • To ensure the high profile of St Mary’s is recognised in the local, national and international community.

St Mary’s offers positions on its own pay scale based on experience and expertise. Benefits include pension scheme, reduced school fees for dependents (including girls and boys up to 11 at St Margaret’s Preparatory School), a nominal fee for on site Sport Club membership (including access to a wide range of fitness classes, swimming pool and gym) and excellent term time meals.
