The Principal (Special School) is responsible for developing and promoting the school as a centre of excellence for students with special educational needs. The Principal (Special School) is responsible for providing professional leadership and management for the school, and for establishing the values and aims to ensure a high-quality education for all students. The Principal (Special School) must establish a culture within the school which promotes excellence, equality and high expectations, and this can only be achieved by effectively managing teaching and learning in order to improve standards of learning and achievement.

Qualifications, Experience & Special Skills:

  • Be a qualified, graduate teacher, with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject (preferably in Special Education) area is required.
  • Master’s Degree in Education (preferably in Special Education) e.g. MA, MSc, Med and formal School Leadership Certification e.g. (NPQH/NELP/ISL (OPC)) certification or an equivalent qualification in education administration is required.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years successful teaching experience in a minimum of two schools including a special school; at least five (5) years of which must have been senior leadership and previous experience of being a principal or senior manager within a school.
  • Specialist qualification in some aspect of special educational needs.
  • Strong skills in teaching and learning processes for children with special educational needs, with the ability to exemplify and identify good practice in teaching and learning both at school and classroom level.
  • Secure knowledge and experience of school self-evaluation and strategic planning to inform school improvement are essential.
  • Excellent communication skills and relationship management skills, with the ability to work and communicate effectively with students, parents, school personnel and a wide range of stake holders.
  • The ability to lead school improvement, evidenced by effective leadership of school-level projects and initiatives which have demonstrated a positive impact on school improvementProficiency in the full suite of Microsoft Office, and the ability/affinity to learn new technology applications. The post holder should have knowledge of statistical analysis of education data.
  • Knowledge and experience in managing a budget, management and reporting procedures, and sound human resources practices.

Preferred:

  • Involvement in projects outside the school which have promoted wider understanding of the education service e.g. outreach service/ training.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the use of appropriate data for students with special educational needs.
  • Experience of supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
  • Knowledge and experience in other areas impacting the position such as schools’ self-evaluation, strategic planning, curriculum development, staff training, ICT integration, data analysis and management and timetabling.
  • Experience in and knowledge of the Cayman Education system.
  • Ability to foster strong relationships and improve performance of others through coaching and mentoring.
