About us

Al Khor International School is a 4 to 18, co-educational and non-selective international school. Owned by QatarEnergy LNG (QE-LNG), the world’s largest producer of liquefied natural gas, AKIS caters for the children of the company’s employees. We are one of the largest international schools in the Middle East with approximately 4,000 students across our British and CBSE curriculum schools. The school has exceptional facilities and is located in Al Khor Community, 40 minutes north of Qatar’s capital city Doha.

The opportunity:

We are seeking a qualified School Counsellor for January 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will provide a professional and confidential counselling service to our students, promote their wellbeing and help build their resilience. Skills and qualities:

  • A bachelor’s degree in psychology (or similar field) and a master’s degree in Counselling or Psychotherapy, preferably related to children
  • Minimum 2 years’ post qualification experience
  • BACP/ UKCP registration (or similar)
  • Further therapeutic training or qualifications in working with children and young people preferred. Qualifications in CBT, play therapy, drama therapy, art therapy would be an advantage.
  • An understanding of the developmental, emotional, social, and educational needs of children and young people.
  • High level of cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collect and analyse data and produce high-quality reports
  • Ability to work professionally and independently as well as collaboratively


Key Responsibilities:

  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
  • Promote the school’s vision, mission and values
  • Manage a caseload of students who require confidential one to one counselling or therapeutic group work for a range of social and emotional needs
  • Provide support, guidance and advice to parents and carers
  • Maintain appropriate and confidential records
  • Work collaboratively with the Designated Safeguarding Leads across the school to evaluate the needs of identified students and determine appropriate levels of support
  • Work collaboratively with the pastoral team to respond in a timely and effective manner to student needs across the school
  • Continually review and evaluate the counselling service
  • Actively engage in professional development opportunities to support the role
