Job overview

Help shape the future: join us as a Governor

Sir William Perkins’s School is an academically selective school for girls aged 11 to 18 based in Chertsey, Surrey, where student wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do and our overarching belief is that happiness at school is central to academic success.

As we celebrate our 300th anniversary year in 2025, this is an exciting time of strategic development at SWPS. Having taken the decision to admit boys from 2026, subject to regulatory approval, the school is embarking on a move towards full coeducation.

We are now looking for an additional member of the Governing Body with professional experience in property management, surveying, or a related field to enhance our current skills set and bring a new area of expertise to the Board.

The role:

  • As a School Governor with property and surveying expertise you will:
  • Work with the Head and Senior Leadership Team to develop the strategy and direction of the School.
  • Provide strategic advice on the maintenance, development, and improvement of school facilities.
  • Support the long-term planning of school estates to meet the needs of students and staff
  • Ensure that Governance of the School is effective, appropriate, and within the legal and regulatory framework of the independent education sector.
  • Ensure sound financial management and investment.
  • Provide support to the Head and Leadership Team while being prepared to challenge and question.
  • Help oversee compliance with health and safety regulations and building standards.

Governors are expected to attend around three Governor Board meetings per year and, three Estates subcommittee meetings. These are generally held at the school, but on occasion via Teams. Governors should read thoroughly all supporting documentation and be familiar with the School’s ethos and policies. Mandatory training in areas such as Safeguarding and Compliance is required on joining the Board and must be kept updated throughout a Governor’s tenure. Occasional attendance at events such as open mornings and awards presentations is required in order to establish familiarity with the School.

This is a highly rewarding, pro-bono opportunity to contribute to the success of a thriving School. The role would suit people who are passionate about education and have sufficient time to commit to the role.

Interested parties should send a CV and covering letter to:

Adrian Durand-Deslongrais, Clerk to Governors

It is important to us that our Governing Body reflects the diversity of our Student Community, and we would therefore welcome applications from minority groups currently under-represented on the Board.

Sir William Perkins’s School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Applicants must undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

About Sir William Perkins's School

Welcome to Sir William Perkins's School

Where Generosity, Curiosity and Ambition thrive and Great Things are expected

At Sir William Perkins’s School, students are at our heart. We expect the best from them and in return they can expect the best from us – both in terms of teaching of the highest quality, and in receiving the tailored support and attention they need to achieve.

We know our students, their talents, hopes and aspirations; and in turn we seek staff who actively encourage our students to explore their interests and achieve their potential in an innovative and inspiring atmosphere.

Founded in 1725, we are a warm and friendly independent girls’ school for 600 students aged 11-18. Set in 13 acres of attractive green-belt grounds in Surrey, SWPS is a beautiful environment with first-rate facilities, in which both staff and students flourish.

Easily reached by road or public transport, we are a two-minute walk from Chertsey Train Station, with direct links to London Waterloo and surrounding towns.

The power of potential

We challenge each student to explore their potential through academic aspiration and active participation. We teach our students to expect Great Things of themselves, because we know every individual is capable of Great Things.

Academic success is always our priority, but education should be about far more than achieving top grades. We believe in educating the whole person and equipping our students with the confidence to make their mark on the world.

We encourage students to become involved in the many co-curricular activities on offer. Taking every opportunity to develop their interests and creativity, their interpersonal, teamwork and leadership skills, to be forward-thinking and to reach into the wider community.

A SWPS student is:

  • Generous with their thoughts, their gifts and their time.
  • Curious about their world and their future.
  • Ambitious for themselves and for others.
