Job overview

About the School: The British School of Lomé (BSL) is located in a secure, green area of the capital city of Togo. It is within close proximity to beach resorts and shares the coastline with neighbouring countries. The school offers boarding facilities, a low student-teacher ratio, maintains well-established community links, and boasts an excellent reputation in Togo, West Africa, and beyond. In 2023, BSL celebrated its 40th Anniversary, using the occasion to honour all staff, students, and successful alumni who have contributed to making the school a model of diversity, inclusivity, and quality. BSL continues to strive for excellence, guided by its motto: "Endeavour is all."

The Secondary section comprises UK Years 7-13, offering the UK National Curriculum in KS3, GL Assessments in Primary and Secondary as end-of-year assessments, Cambridge IGCSE, and IBDP. The Primary section starts from Crèche, where our youngest students are 18 months to 4 years old (Reception). We then follow the national curriculum with aspects of inquiry-based learning/STEM from Year 1 (ages 5/6) until Year 6 (ages 10/11), with subject specialist teachers sharing the teaching load. Representing the British Council, BSL provides English language classes, expert university admission, and career guidance. BSL is the only SAT and IELTS examination centre in Togo.

Our school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people in our care. We follow safer recruitment practices, and appointments are subject to vetting including reference checks, health, identity, and criminal/police record checks.

About the Country: Togo is deemed a safe country and boasts one of the fastest-growing economies in West Africa. The flourishing international community mirrors the country's rapid growth, contributing to the diversity of the school and its expanding enrolment. Togo recently joined the Commonwealth as its 56th member, underscoring the significance of English in global affairs, business, and sciences. With a low cost of living, developing infrastructure, and ample amenities, staff enjoy a comfortable lifestyle and have the chance to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of cultures and heritage during their time here.

 Professional requirements:

•  A minimum university degree, full UK teacher certification or equivalent from the applicant's native level country (Bachelor of Education, PGCE, PGCEi, QTS, or equivalent) is required.

•        Preference for candidates with recent teaching experience in the UK or an accredited British or international school.

•        Experience in SEND would be advantageous for leading this aspect across the whole school.

•        Proven track record of delivering outstanding academic results and data and tracking.

•        Understanding of the needs of the international student body and a commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

•        Flexible and creative approach towards the school curriculum, assessments and structures.

The School Can Offer You:

·        An initial two-year contract (renewable) with a competitive (tax-free) salary.

·        Due to the low cost of living, expat staff can save a significant amount to send home.

·        End-of-contract renewal benefits.

·        Free, furnished, spacious family or single accommodation (independent/shared) in a safe compound with nearby amenities.

·        Free schooling for up to two children and discounts for additional children.

·        School transport is provided from staff residences in the morning and after school, except for those living within a short walking distance from the school.

·        Assistance in finding suitable house help if needed.

·        Subsidised utilities, including Wi-Fi.

·        Family health insurance.

·        Family visa and immigration assistance.

·        Moreover, and most importantly, a professional, high-standard, kind, caring and stress-free work environment.
