Job overview

 The Role:

The British School, Kathmandu is seeking a passionate and talented teacher of Design Technology to join our successful Creative and Performing Arts (CPA) faculty from August 2025.

Design Technology is taught from Year 7 at TBS. All students study DT in Key Stage 3 and DT is a popular option at KS4 and KS5 where students are prepared for the Edexcel IGCSE and the linear Edexcel A level in Design Technology. As an integral member of the Creative and Performing Arts (CPA ) faculty you will be fully involved in the extra-curricular life of the faculty, for example in contributing to set and prop design for the school production.

There is a recently refurbished well-equipped modern DT workshop and adjacent preparation/storage room, including 3D printers and a CAD CAM laser cutter. There is a full time DT technician who prepares materials and assists during lessons.

The successful candidate will have a passion for design and will be able to inspire students throughout the secondary section of the school to turn their design ideas into high quality products. A proven track record in Product Design or the ability to offer a second subject on the TBS curriculum may be an advantage.

As well as being part of your academic faculty team, all teachers are members of a Key Stage pastoral team and will be mentor (tutor) to a small group of up to 12 students. Mentors meet with their mentor group at the start of each day for a 25 minute structured mentor programme, as well as teaching a weekly PSHE lesson.

All teachers contribute to our extensive co-curricular activities programme, with a minimum commitment of one hour per week throughout the year. Educational trips and residential visits form a key part of our curriculum and all teaching staff take part in the annual school expeditions where each year group takes part in a week long adventure or service expedition where there is the opportunity for students and teachers alike to experience Nepal outside the Kathmandu valley.

In this partnership, we seek to develop healthy and happy, well-rounded individuals who are confident, thoughtful adaptable and able to embrace and influence an ever-changing world. Our students will act with integrity, care for communities and the environment, and seek social justice for all.  Our motto is 'Excellence and kindness at the top of the world'.

Overview

The British School, Kathmandu is a not for profit, non-selective, coeducational school.  Around 550 students from Early Years to Year 13 attend school in our unique campus in the historical area of Patan, surrounded by the Himalayan mountain range. Our community consists of families from over 40 different countries and together we help develop young people who strive for excellence and are kind, through an emphasis on challenge, creativity, confidence, compassion, and community.

School structure

The school is generally two form entry throughout. The Primary Section and The Secondary Section are each led by their own leadership teams with a whole-school Principal leading both.

The Leadership teams oversee the monitoring and tracking of progress of each student and are responsible for the high quality of teaching and learning, along with the outstanding pastoral care. From Year 4 upwards, every child sits a Cognitive Ability Test (CAT4s) which enables the staff to assess the progress of the students, map their strengths and weaknesses and personalise their learning journey, so that it is appropriately challenging.

All appointed staff are enthusiastic, energetic and fully committed to delivering a high quality British education. Educational advisors from the UK and Commonwealth visit the school to share their expertise on best current practices in education. Our most BSO Inspection Report (February 2016) stated “The British School, Kathmandu is an excellent school: it provides an outstanding quality of education and demonstrates an exceptional flexibility in meeting the learning and personal needs of its students”.

We are situated in the Jhamsikhel area of Patan, approximately two kilometres to the south of Kathmandu. There is a wealth of activities available from art and sport to good restaurants and a busy social calendar. Whilst Kathmandu is a city, on the edges of the valley and beyond there is a beauty which exceeds all expectations; as Rudyard Kipling said, "The wildest dreams of Kew are reality in Kathmandu”.
