Job overview

Music Teacher to Start August 18, 2025

The International British School of Bucharest is currently seeking to appoint a qualified, experienced Music Teacher with a proven track record of outstanding teaching across KS3-5. To start August 18, 2025.

The International British School of Bucharest is an AoBSO, COBIS, HPL school undergoing 3 yearly BSO inspections. The school was last inspected in November 2022, receiving the highest rating possible of Excellent in regard to both Student Progress and Attainment and Pastoral Care.

In 2020, IBSB also became the first High Performance Learning School in Romania and is a member of the Fellowship of World Class School, with student attainment levels well above the national average in England, as indicated by our IGCSE exam results, with 53% of students achieving an A-A* grade.

There are currently 270 students enrolled in the Secondary School, with small class sizes made up of 65% Romanian and 35% international from 30 different countries.

LIFE IN ROMANIA

Romania itself is without a doubt one of the most beautiful countries in Europe to work in. You have 4 seasons, pristine white sand beaches to enjoy in the summer, the last remaining mountain wilderness in Europe, Germanic styled castle towns to escape to in the weekends, and a wide range of ski fields located just 90 mins from school in the winter, and many more sunny days than rain.

LIFE IN BUCHAREST

The capital city is clean and safe with a good public metro and tram system costing around 20 euros a month. You can walk around at night on your own safely and there is lots to do on the weekends. You have malls located throughout the city with all the western brand shops and restaurants you would expect, but at prices generally below that of western Europe, so your money goes much further. Teachers are paid 3-4 times the average salary, so again it is easy to save and eating out is cheap, costing around 15-20 euros for two-course meal, and drink, which is why many of our international staff eat out often. It is also a place where you can realistically save to buy your own apartment by the end of your first contract term, saving on rent, as many staff have done.

ROMANIAN PEOPLE

Romanians are a very warm and friendly people, well educated, with most speaking 3 or more languages. The students are generally above the UK average in ability and well-behaved, so teaching in Romania is a pleasure, with plenty of support from both the school and the parents - we are very fortunate to have one of the most supportive Parent Associations I have experienced to date, who for example organised a surprise morning tea for all the staff at the end of Term 1a this year to thank us for a successful first half term.

LIFE OUTSIDE SCHOOL

The staff environment is welcoming and supportive, with groups of staff regularly attending Wednesday Quiz Night and the traditional end of week Friday staff social. Staff also regularly head away on the weekends together and during school holidays exploring one of the many beautiful old Germanic-styled towns scattered across the Carpathian mountains, skiing in the winter, visiting the Black Sea coast in the summer, and taking the opportunity to use the low cost airlines to visit Greece, Italy, Turkey, and many other countries a short flight way.

Staff turnover is low at IBSB, with most staff having brought apartments and houses, owing to the comfortable climate and lifestyle offered in Romania, where you can save a good portion of your monthly salary, enabling staff to travel and save for the future.
