Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a Teacher of Classics, and for the right candidate a new Head of our Classics department. The Head of Department oversees the teaching of Latin and Classical Civilisation at key stages 3, 4 and 5. Teaching would take place both at our Year 7-11 site in Leckford Road and at our Sixth Form site at 333, Banbury Road.


The department

This is an opportunity to teach in/lead a popular Classics department, working with three other colleagues. Latin and Classic Civilisation are taught as part of the core curriculum in Years 7 and 8. In Year 9, students  have the option to study Latin and/or Classical Civilisation In Year 10, Latin and Classical Civilisation are offered as GCSE options and there is typically one group of students taking Latin and one taking Classical Civilisation in each of Years 10 and 11. We follow the Eduqas (WJEC) specification for GCSE Latin, taking the option of studying the Roman Civilisation unit (Roman City Life). In the Sixth Form we usually have a small group studying Latin and/or Classical Civilisation in each of Year 12 and Year 13. At A Level we follow the OCR specifications for each subject.

The successful candidate will assist with teaching Latin and Classical Civilisation across all key stages 3, 4 and 5, sharing GCSE and A Level teaching.

Necessary qualifications

All applicants will be expected to have an excellent degree in Classics or a related subject and be able to demonstrate their teaching ability. d’Overbroeck’s does not require that its staff possess a PGCE or equivalent formal teaching qualification, though most members of staff do in fact have an appropriate qualification. 


Salary

d’Overbroeck’s has its own salary scale (comparable to, or above the national scale) and pension scheme. Remuneration for this post will include an allowance above the main teacher scale for head of department responsibilities.

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
