Teacher of A Level Economics

THE POST

St Helen’s is looking to appoint a permanent Teacher of Economics to start April or September 2025. Consideration would be given to candidates who can work either 0.8 (4 days per week) or full time. Applications are also welcomed from Early Career Teachers. 

THE DEPARTMENT

Economics is only taught at A level at St Helen’s School, following the Edexcel syllabus. The Department consists of two teachers, the Head of Department and another teacher. 

Economics is a well-established subject within the St Helen’s Sixth Form and is one of the most popular options among our students. There are currently six Economics groups (three in Year 12, three in Year 13), with between six and ten students in each class.  

Academic standards in Economics are high, with majority of the students expected to achieve A*-A grades in this year’s cohort for their A level examinations. However, within the context of a selective intake the ability range of Economics students is broad, and the Department has a strong focus on tracking and monitoring progress and of early intervention and support to ensure that the students achieve the highest grades of which they are capable.

At the other end of the A level process, a considerable number of students progress to study Economics and Economics-related courses at university. The person appointed to this post will need to engage closely with the UCAS application process and consider how best to prepare students for studying Economics and Economics-related courses beyond A-level.  

The person will also support the link teacher for our Young Enterprise Company Programme and will help them oversee the smooth and efficient running of the teams. He/she will also be expected to investigate and introduce suitable enrichment activities which ensure a breadth of experience for the students studying the subject.

SELECTION PROCESS

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to the school where they will be interviewed by members of the Senior Leadership team, be observed teaching a lesson, have a tour of the school and meet other members of the Economics Department and wider Faculty.
