Job overview
Full Time or substantial Part Time
Required an enthusiastic, qualified and inspiring teacher of Academic Support/SEND to join our team. The candidate will be able to offer Academic Support in the Prep and Senior School (GCSE) with particular emphasis on Years 5 to 11. The ideal candidate will be special needs trained to OCR Level 5 (Level 7 to assess for access arrangements) or above and have knowledge of JCQ Access Arrangements. The appointed candidate will work alongside the current Head of Academic Support. The role is mostly assisting with pupil assessment, contributing to the departmental administrative workload, and teaching small groups/pairs/classes of children requiring support.
St Edmund’s is an expanding and successful school of 620+ girls and boys aged 2 to 16. The school participates in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme. Staff children may be educated at the school at a discount of up to 85% of the normal tuition fees. The opportunity arises due to expansion. The position is offered full-time although substantial part-time may be considered. Accommodation on site may be available. Early applications are encouraged.
St Edmund’s is thriving with numbers the highest in its 150 year history. Average class sizes are small, circa seventeen pupils. In 2024 our students posted a 97% GCSE pass rate (grades 4-9) against a national average of 67%. The proportion of grades awarded at 7-9 (the old A*/A) was 45% compared to a national average of 22%.
The school was inspected in October 2024 by ISI. The inspection was carried out under the protocols of the new ‘Framework 23’ and the reports do not contain an overall judgement or grading of the school. Therefore, schools are no longer rated “excellent” (our previous gradings) but instead the report focusses on the extent to which a school meets the criteria for the expected standards in an independent school. Schools are judged to have either ‘met’ or ‘not met’ the standards and, in the case of St Edmund’s, the inspectors judged that all standards were met. A synopsis and full copy of the inspection report are available on the school’s website.
A combined information and application form may be obtained from Richard Taylor (Deputy Head Academic) by email at rmat@saintedmunds.co.uk or by phone on 01428 604808.
The closing date for applications is Friday 7 February 2025.
Applications by email are preferred and interviews will take place in February/March. Applications via TES are NOT accepted.
Please note that the school takes very seriously its responsibility for safeguarding the children in its care and the successful applicant will be required to undergo enhanced DBS vetting. We are committed to equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief and marriage and civil partnerships.

Values and vision
Since its foundation in the late 19th century, St Edmund’s has had the same ethos: to instil in every child a sense of self-esteem and belonging by building on their own talents, opening their eyes to new ones and giving them focussed and personal support whenever it is needed.
The school focuses on the individual needs, talents and strengths of each pupil, and aims to help children make use of extra-curricular activities to ensure each one receives a holistic education.
Its academic aims include a commitment to providing a broad based curriculum that reflects traditional values and subjects yet with due emphasis on innovation and modern techniques.
