Island School is looking to appoint a full-time Teacher of Chinese under the Languages Faculty to start in August 2025 at our recently relocated new campus located at Mid-levels, Hong Kong. Preferably the teacher has the qualifications to teach Japanese. 

Island School is a highly successful IB secondary school located in the heart of Hong Kong. Over 1300 students aged 11 to 18 study an innovative and exciting curriculum combining our self-designed courses, the MYP, IGCSE, and IB programs. 

This person will be responsible for delivering high-quality Chinese (and preferably Japanese) language instruction to secondary school students, the role will focus on fostering students' language skills, cultural understanding, and appreciation for the Chinese and Japanese language through engaging and interactive lessons in alignment with the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum.


Responsibilities

  • Teach Chinese (and preferably Japanese) at different proficiency levels to ensure that instruction is differentiated to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Provide regular assessment with progressive feedback.
  • Foster a positive learning environment to encourage student confidence in language learning and culture education.
  • Organise and engage in different extracurricular activities and language trips/programs to promote student interest with immersive experiences.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, or
  • Bachelor’s Degree, as well as a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate of Education) or equivalent
  • Proficiency in Chinese and fluency in teaching Japanese with a strong understanding of Chinese and Japanese culture
  • Proven experience in teaching at the secondary level within a recognized educational organisation, preferably within an IB school setting
  • Strong understanding of current pedagogy, with excellent practice exemplified in own teaching
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Proficient and experienced in utilising data analysis and learning technologies
  • Commitment to contribute to the extra-curricular activities of the school
  • Commitment to fostering an active and creative learning environment
  • Commitment to professional development and collaboration across the school
