Job overview
Teacher of Design and Technology
Permanent/Full-time
MPS/UPS + SEN allowance (Outer London)
Required January 2025 or as soon as after, i.e. April 2025 or September 2025
Salmons Brook School is a specialist SEMH (Social Emotional and Mental Health) school for young people aged 11 – 18. We have 70 places for young people. We opened in September 2022 for young people in Year 7 – 10 and will continue to expand each year. Our vision and core purpose is to improve the quality of life for our school and wider community by nurturing potential. We are focused on developing positive character traits within our students and approach this through a shared commitment to our ‘CREATE’ values.
Knowledge and experience working with young people with SEND and SEMH is a requirement. We are a trauma-sensitive school which adopts a restorative approach to behaviour. We have developed a unique approach to teaching and learning that is designed to meet both the academic and SEMH needs of our students. Our teachers will need to embrace our ‘four-element’ curriculum model, as well as integrating our ‘CREATE’ values and ‘Circles of Intervention’ into a holistic way of working within their subjects.
We are looking for a Design and Technology who will be able to develop and deliver a practical and vocational curriculum where pupils can develop the skills required to undertake either vocational qualifications at entry or level 1 and/or GCSE or level 2 equivalent courses within KS3 and KS4. From September we will also be opening a Post 16 provision and DT will be a vital area within this and so we are looking for someone to develop our vocational provision within Technology, this is likely to include: DT, construction, creative craft and hair and beauty and so it is an exciting time to join a Specialist School that has vocational education as an essential part of the curriculum.
This is an exciting role for an experienced Design Technology teacher or someone with Trade Skills experience. You may have worked in FE or with apprentices within the construction field or have a keen interest in working with young people and would like to pursue teaching related qualifications. We are looking for someone who is experienced in one or more of the following areas: Food Technology, product design and systems and control, construction, engineering or traditional woodwork and metalwork, who wants to work practically with small groups of SEMH students to develop vocational skills and work towards qualifications that will provide them with both life skills and career opportunities.
As well as subject expertise, our teachers will be calm and sensitive at times of potential dysregulation. They will be experienced in de-escalation techniques and have a working and practical knowledge of key frameworks such as emotion coaching, nurture principles and zones of regulation. They will need to be committed to our core purpose and desire to improve the quality of life for our community and will have to develop a curriculum and learning experience that enables our young people to achieve, both in the short and long term.
Salmons Brook School is a unique school community and so we are looking for someone who will complement the existing staff team and who can work collaboratively with our young people, families, and staff to make an impact.
