Job overview

We are looking to recruit a personable, well-qualified and motivated graduate to join our highly successful and innovative school as a Teacher of English, on a full-time basis. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced teachers or those new to the profession. The successful candidate will teach across the full spectrum of age and ability ranges, demonstrate excellent subject knowledge and have an ability to enthuse and inspire pupils, contributing keenly to the wider life of John Lyon.

John Lyon is a sought-after academically selective 3-18 co-educational independent day school, based in Harrow-on-the-Hill in North West London. Having educated boys from Harrow and surrounding areas since 1876, John Lyon welcomed its first girls as pupils in September 2021. The School has also moved from being a senior school to an all through school, following an amalgamation with Quainton Hall Prep School in 2021.

Pupils’ academic standards and personal development were both rated the highest possible ‘excellent’ in our most recent ISI school inspections. Add to this the vibrant Co-Curricular Programme focusing on a sense of community, achievement and wellbeing, a range of more than 100 extra-curricular activities, and pastoral care that is second to none, a John Lyon education nurtures high-achieving and happy children.

Trainee or newly qualified teachers will have a dedicated mentor, a range of training activities and the chance to regularly observe outstanding teachers. John Lyon supports unqualified teachers in achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) qualification whilst working at the School. For applicants without a teaching qualification, we are looking for: passion for their specialist subject, excellent subject knowledge, enthusiasm, strong listening and communication skills, determination and resolve.

Benefits include:

  • Competitive salary, above that of the maintained sector.
  • Membership of the competitive Harrow Corporation DC Pension Scheme, which includes an additional 6% salary enhancement on top of the core salary scale.
  • Fees remission for children of staff.
  • Surface Book for every member of teaching staff.
  • A commitment to continuing professional development.
  • Complimentary lunch during term-time.
  • Use of the School’s Sports Centre, including swimming pool.
  • Discounted membership to Harrow School’s Golf Club.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme.

John Lyon is Northwest London’s leading co-ed, all-through 3 to 18, independent school. We are forward-thinking and dynamic in our approach. Our eight School Values: Ambition, Community, Creativity, Enquiry, Excellence, Heritage, Innovation and Resolve guide us in all we do and are embedded into School life.

Together with our Prep School, we proudly serve families in Harrow-on-the-Hill, around Harrow and further afield by offering a world-class school experience. John Lyon is a happy and thriving community.

At John Lyon, we believe that every pupil has unique talents and strengths. We pride ourselves on providing an enriching, supportive and challenging environment for every pupil, while promoting a culture of academic excellence, personal responsibility and respect for others.

Academic work is just the beginning, and we firmly believe that the additional opportunities we provide through our extra-curricular, co-curricular and Excellence programmes are equally important, playing a vital role in equipping our pupils with the skills and experiences they will need to help them succeed in life at school and beyond. Pupils find that our vibrant and inclusive co-ed classrooms create a diverse learning community in which all can thrive.

We embrace technology and put it at the forefront of all that we do. As a ‘Microsoft Showcase School’, we are one of only 82 other schools and colleges in the UK to be recognised by Microsoft.

We are not your typical school. We are part of something much bigger. John Lyon School sits within John Lyon Foundation and alongside the Harrow Family of Schools, which includes Harrow School itself and Harrow International Schools around the globe. Pupils benefit from these close links and regularly take part in pan-Family events, including an annual Fifth Form Conference, assemblies and lessons streamed with partner schools, creative-writing anthology and a STEAM magazine. In addition, staff often have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues all over the world in order to develop best practice and exchange ideas and resources.
