Job overview

The Governors of this very successful Catholic High School wish to appoint a dynamic and inspirational Teacher of English to join our strong and dedicated English Department.

 This role will offer the successful candidate exciting challenges that will be both rewarding and fulfilling, and will support you to achieve your own personal career goals and aspirations. Governors would be delighted to offer a TLR 3.5 (£3,169) for up to three years, for an appropriately experienced and exceptional candidate.

 Cardinal Allen is a great place to work and an excellent community to belong to. We receive tremendous support from our parent body and our committed group of Governors. Our pupils actively engage in all aspects of school life, and there is a culture of mutual support and openness.

 Governors hope to appoint someone who will:

Love and care for our children as much as they would their own;

Be, or have the potential to be, in every sense a great teacher;

Be enthusiastic, resourceful and keen to ensure that the highest possible standards of pupil achievement, personal development and well-being are achieved;

Have high expectations of both themselves and those they work with;

Be able to lead and inspire colleagues to continuously improve;

Always be willing to go the extra mile for our children.

The department consists of seven members of staff led by a Curriculum Leader and supported by a Lead Teacher. The department has a vibrant mix of innovative and traditional teaching, with lesson observations demonstrating that standards among the team are very high; however, this does not mean that the team isn’t committed to further improvements. The department has a strong sense of team spirit and mutual support, as well as a passion for their subject and a commitment to deliver a curriculum that allows each pupil to reach his or her potential. We know that even higher standards can be achieved and existing team members are very supportive of initiatives to change and improve. Our new colleague will receive all the support and encouragement necessary to make a difference to our pupils and develop professionally for the next stage of his/her career.  Departmental classrooms are grouped together in the main school building and the department has an office and ample storage space. Each classroom is equipped with a desktop computer, interactive LED learning panel and visualiser. The department also has a dedicated room with fifteen computers which is used for small group work.

We are an ambitious school and want the very best for the youngsters in our care. First and foremost we are looking for a great Teacher of English, or someone with the potential to become one; for that reason, we welcome applications from ECTs and more experienced candidates. For a colleague new to teaching, we have a perfect track record of supporting newly qualified teachers through their NQT / ECT framework. Governors would very much welcome your application. For a more experienced colleague, this position offers a fantastic opportunity for someone who is already a great classroom teacher to take on some leadership responsibility.

Our children deserve the best, and so Governors would be delighted to offer a temporary TLR, for up to three years, to an exceptional candidate with appropriate experience and track record. If you feel that your application falls into this category, Governors will be happy to discuss this at interview, along with what your additional responsibility might include.

Values and vision

Our school's ethos is based on the Christian tradition. It reflects the traditional values and standards that are respected and expected within an ever-changing world.

We expect all lessons to be stimulating, enjoyable and innovative. A wide variety of teaching strategies help personalise learning to ensure pupils are able to access the full curriculum, thereby encouraging creative and independent approaches to learning.

Our staff provide a wealth of enrichment activities for our pupils, including residential visits within the UK, Europe and even as far afield as India and the USA. All these visits have educational themes. In addition, there are frequent day visits to centres of specific educational interest that relate to all areas of the curriculum. These opportunities are available to all pupils.

'Pupils are proud to belong to Cardinal Allen Catholic High School; they are greatly appreciative of all that the school provides and how it supports and nurtures them. They feel encouraged and inspired to live by the school motto and be all that you can be.

Leaders and governors are deeply committed to the Church’s mission in education; they are unequivocal in prioritising the Catholic life of the school. As a result, staff and pupils’ understanding of the school’s mission is outstanding. The ethos of the school is rooted firmly in the teaching of the Catholic Church. The fruits of this ethos are manifest in the pupils and staff in the school; through the very strong relationships and in the profound sense of belonging and of pride that exists. The behaviour and attitudes of pupils observed throughout the inspection were exemplary.

Cardinal Allen is an outstanding Catholic school; the capacity to improve still further is also outstanding.'
