Job overview
An able mathematician who is, or is interested in becoming, an inspiring teacher is required for this academically selective, coeducational North London day school from September 2025.
The successful applicant will join a large and successful department teaching full-time across the entire ability range from Year 7 to Year 13; the ability to teach Further Mathematics, STEP and help with Oxbridge preparation is a recommendation.
The successful candidate should be academically well qualified: it is expected that applicants will have excellent grades in A Level (or the equivalent) Mathematics and have taken a degree, or pursued a career, containing a significant amount of Mathematics. The Department has a great deal of experience in successfully training teachers who enter the profession without formal teaching qualifications (including the current Head of Department and several senior colleagues) and in providing suitable opportunities for continued professional development for experienced teachers. The school supports colleagues who wish to gain Qualified Teaching Status.
The Department
Our department teaching style is Socratic: pupils encounter new material through exploration and problem-solving. We aim for pupils to take real ownership of their Mathematics by ensuring that all new study comes from them. This approach leads to a deeper understanding of the subject and helps pupils become the best mathematicians they can be.
We have 32 specialist Mathematics teachers and Mathematics is the most popular A-level choice at Highgate. Standards of achievement are high: in last year’s public examinations, 86% of candidates were awarded an A* or A grade in Maths A Level and 88% achieved this in Further Maths A Level. We have approximately 100 Further Mathematicians in the Sixth Form and a number of pupils make successful Oxbridge applicants almost every year. Results at GCSE are similarly excellent, with 88% of pupils achieving a grade 8/9. About 220 pupils enter each of the UK Mathematics Challenges, with around twenty pupils qualifying for follow on rounds. In recent years, we have had pupils placed in the top fifty nationally in both the Intermediate and Senior Olympiads.
Partnership teaching is at the heart of our work as a department, with the equivalent of approximately two teachers’ timetable allocations devoted to working with local Haringey schools. The Mathematics Department has pioneered a number of partnership programmes, including Primary Maths Clubs for years 4 and 5, Mathematics Enrichment days, Maths Circles, Further Maths teaching and university preparation courses. Highgate is also the principal academic sponsor of the London Academy of Excellence in Tottenham, a highly successful Free School, where results place it among the top state Sixth Forms nationally.

About Highgate School
Established in 1565, Highgate is now one of the UK’s leading co-educational independent schools, with around 1,700 pupils aged 3-18.
Academic excellence
Academic standards at Highgate remain high, as our most recent exam results demonstrate. In 2023 over 50% of all our GCSE entries were graded 9, and 78.9% were 9 or 8. Within our Sixth Form, in 2023, 46.5% of all our exam entries were awarded an A* at A level (or Pre-U equivalent) and 82.8% were A* or A. In 2023, 30 pupils matriculated at either Cambridge or Oxford colleges, whilst others took up places at prestigious Art, Architecture and Medical schools. Every year, the vast majority of our leavers enter Russell Group universities or other elite Higher Education establishments, including in the US and Canada.
Beyond the classroom
Alongside their studies, Highgate pupils are offered a wide range of co-curricular activities which enhance both their childhood experience and their future aspirations. We are also exceptionally fortunate when it comes to sport with extensive facilities, excellent staff and a wide range of activities available.
At Highgate, we encourage social responsibility through our charity work, both locally and further afield. For example, we are the principal education sponsor for the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham and support Great Lakes High School in Uganda.
Location
Our School is situated in one of the most attractive and popular areas of North London, a short distance from central London and adjacent to Hampstead Heath. We endeavour to be a sustainable school and are well served by good public transport links.
Management
Our Head, Mr Adam Pettitt, leads our Senior School and is also responsible for the overall direction of our Pre-Preparatory and Junior Schools.
