Job overview

A small school doing big things

“Addey and Stanhope school is a very special school, for students and staff alike. I joined in 2020 and can say, that by far, it is the best school I’ve ever worked at. There is a level of trust, where you are allowed to be the professional you are. I’ve felt valued and supported every step of the way and consequently feel driven to give my best.”

“The school has an inspiring atmosphere of calm and learning which is VERY unusual in any school, let alone one in such a deprived area. I can speak with authority having visited around 130 schools a year as part of my role.”

“There is a definite sense of community at this school. Staff speak highly of the way leaders consider their workloads when making decisions. Teachers new to the profession feel very well supported, including with how to manage behaviour. Staff retention is high.” OFSTED 2023

We all work at Addey & Stanhope because we believe that we can make a difference to the life chances of the young people of Deptford. This has remained the core purpose of the school for over 400 years, and this will never be compromised. We have an outstanding reputation in our local community and beyond. You will be joining a school that is nationally recognised in a range of areas both academic and pastoral.

Teacher of Science Required as soon as possible

We are looking to recruit a passionate and open-minded science educator.

This is a forward-thinking department, with a unique take on the science curriculum. We have put the growth of our community’s science capital at the heart of what we do, seeking to equip our students to become the next generation of problem-solvers and activist citizens. STEM and vocational enrichment pervade our science offer, which points to far beyond our successful GCSE attainment.

Serving the diverse communities of Deptford, our science department has shown rapidly increasing results. There is a popular triple science offer available as an additional option, as well as outstanding SEN and EAL provision. Every year group has a strong emphasis on practical experiences, with investigations, field trips, dissections, and expert visits, delivered in thematic units linking the science curriculum to real-world experiences such as midwifery, architecture, and meditation.

This is not a run-of-the-mill department or school, and we are looking to recruit someone who shares our passion for science education based on wonder and joy as well as rigour and high expectations. Our school has an innovative and non-judgmental approach to performance management, centering process and pedagogy, and we are particularly interested in applications from teachers who consider themselves lifelong learners.

ECTs are welcome to apply. We have an excellent mentoring program, and the right appointee will benefit from a wealth of experience and support, both formal and informal. If you wish to discuss the school and the role, or arrange a visit, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

We are looking for a teacher who is:

  • Passionate about education and science
  • Is an innovative and creative practitioner
  • Committed to raising standards, with the highest expectations of all students.
  • Committed to working collaboratively across key stages 3 and 4
  • Able and wanting to work collaboratively with the science team

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The successful applicant will be subject to DBS checks.

Addey & Stanhope School follows the Lewisham Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy

About Addey and Stanhope School

Addey and Stanhope is a school at the heart of the Deptford community in South East London. We are a small, caring, high-achieving school that is rich in tradition and history.  Above all, we are a family at Addey and Stanhope – teachers, students, parents/carers and governors – a family that has the happiness, health and success of our students at the heart of everything we do.

The school is mixed, non-denominational, and was reclassified from a grammar school to a voluntary aided school in 1977.  It is heavily oversubscribed each year and extremely popular with parents because of its reputation and ethos. We are proud of its comprehensive intake, excellent results and the fact that our students speak of Addeys as a ‘second family’.

At Addey and Stanhope we are committed to staff wellbeing and we provide a unique programme of professional development. We close early one day a week in order to facilitate this. We have strong links with a range of partners (locally, nationally and internationally) and this contributes to the professional learning of our staff.

Deptford is a vibrant and eclectic community with a thriving arts scene, only 5 miles South East of central London. The school has excellent transport links and is served by the underground, trains, DLR and buses.
