Job Purpose
To plan, deliver, and assess high-quality lessons in music and media to students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The role focuses on fostering creativity, self-expression, and confidence while addressing students' individual educational and emotional needs in a supportive and nurturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Teaching and Learning
· Deliver engaging and inspiring lessons in music and media that cater to a range of abilities and interests.
· Plan and implement individualised schemes of work that align with the school curriculum and support students' EHCP (Education, Health, and Care Plan) goals.
· To maintain engagement and motivation, utilise various creative teaching methods, including hands-on activities, digital technology, and group collaboration.
· Foster students' confidence and self-expression through practical and theoretical work in music and media.
2. Student Support and Development
· Develop strong, trusting relationships with students, recognising and addressing their unique SEMH needs.
· Promote emotional resilience and social skills through creative arts, building a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
· Provide differentiated support to ensure all students can access the curriculum and succeed.
3. Curriculum Development
· Design and develop innovative music and media projects incorporating performance, production, digital editing, and storytelling elements.
· Ensure lessons link to critical teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills while fostering creativity and self-esteem.
4. Behaviour Management
· Use positive behaviour management strategies to create a safe and supportive learning environment.
· Address challenging behaviour constructively, promoting restorative practices and emotional regulation techniques.
· Establish clear expectations and boundaries, working closely with pastoral staff to support students.
5. Assessment and Progress Monitoring
· Assess students' progress in music and media, providing constructive feedback and celebrating achievements.
· Maintain detailed records of student progress, attendance, and participation, using data to inform planning and support interventions.
· Contribute to student review meetings, providing updates on progress and setting goals in collaboration with the broader team.
6. Safeguarding and Welfare
· Ensure the safety and well-being of all students, adhering to school safeguarding policies and procedures.
· Be vigilant for signs of distress, trauma, or safeguarding concerns, and report promptly in line with school guidelines.
7. Collaboration and Professional Development
· Work collaboratively with colleagues, including teaching assistants, pastoral teams, and external professionals, to ensure a holistic approach to education.
· Attend and contribute to staff meetings, training sessions, and CPD opportunities.
8. Resources and Facilities
· Manage and maintain music and media equipment, ensuring it is used safely and effectively.
· Source and develop resources for teaching and learning, including digital and physical materials.
Person Specification
Essential Skills and Qualifications
· Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification.
· Experience teaching music, media, or related creative arts subjects, preferably in a SEN or SEMH setting.
· Strong knowledge of music and media production techniques, including digital tools and software.
· Understand SEMH needs and strategies to support students effectively.
· Proven ability to build positive relationships with students and colleagues.
· Excellent classroom management skills, with a focus on restorative practices.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications
· Experience delivering accredited courses (e.g., GCSE, BTEC) in music or media.
· Training in trauma-informed teaching or other SEMH-specific approaches.
· Proficiency in using GarageBand, Logic Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, or equivalent software.
· Ability to play musical instruments or experience in music production.
