Job overview

Each year we employ a small number of graduates, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, in a part-time capacity, to provide up-to-date, scholarly and expert knowledge as part of our Waynflete Studies programme. Recent appointees have found the role fits well alongside their current research commitments.

We are looking to appoint a Waynflete Academic in English to commence as soon as possible and to continue throughout the 2024-2025 academic year. The responsibilities of the Waynflete Academic in English will be shaped in accordance with departmental needs to fit the strengths of the candidate appointed. Responsibilities are likely to include:

  • Offering academic enrichment activities for the most able pupils, particularly but not exclusively in the Sixth Form
  • Arranging a programme of talks by visiting speakers, students and colleagues for the Sixth Form English Society
  • Preparing L6th candidates for university application
  • Assisting members of the department in researching and resourcing texts

There is lots of scope for the candidate to develop their own initiatives: recent Waynflete Academics have run creative writing workshops and medieval and postcolonial reading groups, for example. A willingness to contribute to the School’s extensive partnerships programme is desirable, as is a willingness to take on extra paid hours to assist with internal exam marking at certain points in the year.

The role is likely to be the equivalent of half a day per week which is 0.15 of a Full Time Equivalent. The salary for this position will likely to be £3,638 per annum (£24,255 FTE).

Those interested should complete the application form for Teaching Staff, which is available to download via https://www.mcsoxford.org/vacancy/, and should be e-mailed to the Recruitment Officer, Miss Yelena Molcanova (recruitment@mcsoxford.org) by midday, Monday 11th November, early applications are highly encouraged.

Interviews will be held the following week after the closing date, however we reserve the right to interview prior to this date therefore early applications are encouraged. Applicants who only send a CV will be automatically rejected.

Magdalen College School is committed to the safeguarding of pupils, and any offer of employment will be subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure, the receipt of satisfactory references, the school’s pre-employment medical questionnaire, plus sight of relevant ID documentation and degree certificate(s). The enhanced DBS check is due to this role being exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

About Magdalen College School

Magdalen College School is a remarkable place. We are now well into our sixth century, and our former pupils include scholars, war heroes, musicians, Olympians, two Nobel Prize laureates, a Hollywood film director, and a saint.

Our success in public examinations, in securing places at top universities, and in an astonishing array of co-curricular pursuits ensures that we continue this proud tradition. We do so by nurturing the individual potential of each of our pupils, and above all we believe that learning is as fun as it is fulfilling.

William of Waynflete founded Magdalen College School in 1480: schoolmaster, bishop of Winchester and Lord Chancellor of England. Being of humble origins, Waynflete was determined that others of ability should be given the opportunity to learn, to serve and to prosper as he did. And so MCS offers a transformative education in our global university city, the community to which we contribute.

We attract and retain the best staff and MCS is a stimulating, welcoming and thriving environment in which both to learn and to work.

A lot happens at MCS. The various sections of our website (www.mcsoxford.org) including the recent News will give you an impression of our school.

Thank you for your interest.
