Great Fire of London History Detectives

(0)
A starter lesson to introduce children to the Great Fire of London and the concept of source analysis. There are a selection of ‘clues’ - sources - for children to analyse that tell them WHAT, WHEN and WHERE something important happened. This could be an independent, partner or group activity - each set of clues in an envelope, after analysing one set, coming to a conclusion and explaining their conclusion (recording sheet attached) the children move onto the next clue.

George's Marvellous Medicine Investigation

(0)
A maths investigation that targets measuring skills, supported by addition/subtraction, multiplication and directionality. There are two differentiated ‘recipes’, children must soilve the problems on the recipe to determine the quantities needed for their marvellous medicine. A bit of shopping is required for ingredients (water+food colouring, flour, muesli, custard powder and Angel delight) and it can get a bit messy, but my class loved it and everyone was engaged in every aspect of the maths.

EAL - Multiple languages for the register

My school has a very high percentage of EAL children and I use these cards as a way to celebrate all the languages within my classroom - plus a few more. I have them laminated in a special ‘What language shall we use today?’ bucket so children can choose one at random. (Based on Google Translate)

Back to School - Recognise how we are different

(0)
A great game for the first week of school, to encourage discussions around how we are the same and how we are different. I printed mine on different colours to make the different sets easily identifiable. Children pick two adjectives to best describes themselves out of a wide range of choices and keep them hidden from the rest of their table. Repeat with their favourite subject, animal and colour. Then the big reveal! Children show the rest of their table their choices and identify similarities and differences. This can lead to a whole class discussion about how all their different strengths will make yours the best class ever!
