Stories with historical settings 3 weeks

Slavery themed, based on Clara and the Freedom Quilt as text for the week. I hope this might just give others some ideas, I am only in my second year and this is the first time I have taught this unit, and with quite a hard to resource area of history. Please comment, good or constructive criticism is welcome!

Dashes and Hyphens

Used with my HAs in a Year 5/6 class. We went through examples of how to use dashes one at a time, with groups coming up with their own example after each one. I had a follow up worksheet with a set of random story starter pictures. They had to choose a picture and write a sentence using each of the dash styles for that picture. This gathered my afl for individual pupils.

Stone Age, Iron Age, Bronze Age timeline

A powerpoint I have put together of some of the key events leading up to the Iron Age. Not exhaustive, and hopefully historically accurate in the most part. I know that some aspects have many possible reasons, like the extinction of the Neanderthals, and I intend to explain these alongside the activity. I am going to use the slides as a drama activity putting together a timeline video sketch. If I have made any glaring mistakes, please comment so I know to amend. Please bear in mind I am no history expert, just researching my topic area so all constructive feedback welcomed!

Here is the smart notebook I will be using in Week 1 of Autumn 1.

It contains 4 lessons with the following learning intentions:

Revise how numbers to 5 digits are made.
Reason with numbers up to 5 digits.
Revise how numbers with up to 6 digits are made.
Exploring patterns within place value to 6 digits.

Planning based on NCTEM spine material objectives but is not exclusively tied to it.

I’ve only been in Y6 for a couple of years, but have had a decent couple of SATs results in maths so figured maybe I was doing something reasonable and thought I’d share. If you are a maths specialist and spot any mistakes please feedback kindly!!

Hope it saves someone some time.

Here are 7 weeks worth of daily arithmetic practise SATs style.

Each slide contains 1 question for all 4 operations and a fractions question, plus one reasoning challenge.

It is aimed at Autumn 1 (so starts reasonably easy) and doesn’t include the higher level fractions skills or long division as these won’t have been taught yet. The later blocks aim to build up the challenge level in line with concepts taught throughout the year.

I will upload further units for the rest of the year as I make them!

Took me ages so hope it helps save someone else’s life instead of reinventing the wheel.

Freedom quilt art activity

I used this activity with my year 4/5 class and they produced some of the best collage work I have ever seen from children! They planned their own quilt tiles about what freedom meant to them, and then collaged this using a range of materials that reflected the ideas in their designs. There are not too many resources for Slavery topics so thought I would share!

Here is a two week (ish) unit of work created for LSK2.

I used this unit by first of all getting the children to research a rainforest animal and we created shared/ modelled/ scaffolded pieces which were marked and fed back before moving on to creating an independent piece based on fictional creatures.

I’ve included all worksheets and resources that I made myself.

Legends IWB slides 1 week long

This is the first resource I have uploaded. It is the IWB slides that mirror my planning for this weeks Legends part of the unit Myths and Legends. I am an NQT and its the first time I have taught this unit (I find narrative tricky) but I think the lessons have gone pretty well so thought I would share. Please let me know what you think, or if you have any ideas/suggestions including criticsm please as it will help me amend anything for next time! Many thanks!

Used as an introduction to verb tenses. I thought going into the perfect tenses might have been going too far, but my Y5/6 class did really well with it.

Here is the smartboard file I used throughout the topic. About 7 lessons I think. Resources are not included, and the Roots DVD was used early on in the topic. If you teach the topic and would like resources please request and I can upload. Just wasn't sure if people would find useful. Please leave a comment if you download!

Boudicca story and activity

IWB slides describing the story of Boudicca. Specific parts of the story are linked to short hot-seating opportunities, which then link in with the written task. I will be delivering this as part of a Roman Day carousel, so groups of 8 children in my class will do this in an hour session, over 4 sessions in the day. Not tried it out (that's next week) so will update when I&'ve done it (if I need to)
