So, what's the subject?
I decided to capitalize on one of the most interesting events of modern times- the unlikely election of a certain Donald Trump to enthuse my media students. One of Trump's strengths during a protracted promotional campaign leading up to the election was an EXCELLENT media team who produced a number of exceedingly clever media texts to present Trump as the hero waiting in the wings to save the nation! Obviously, Trump is a contentious issue and a few students got quite sniffy initially but the focus is on the SUCCESS OF THIS MEDIA CAMPAIGN not Trump himself and once made clear, the students really enjoyed the lessons on this.
Great debates ensued among my students- although many dislike Trump it is without question that the American media were against him and you need to start from this perspective. It is so interesting. There is a fun video which sums up (1) the media bias (2) how Trump crept into power and (3) how unexpected the victory was considering he began as a total joke at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQgq_R13V3s shorter version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qzl8xjkgXCo
The unit also involves analysing Hillary Clinton's ads as a basis for comparison.
