The two resources cover two different ways of responding to the killing of Candy’s dog in ‘Of Mice and Men’.

The first lesson looks at the extract in relation to themes within the novella and the second asks students to respond to the extract by producing a non-fiction text which persuades an audience.

Lesson one is analytical and covers:
-What are the key themes we have discovered so far.
-How does the shooting of Candy’s dog add to our understanding of these themes?
-Make comments which relate to the themes we have discussed…

Lesson two is based upon writing a text:
-after examining the conventions of persuasive texts the outcome is to produce writing for persuasive purposes (a speech) based upon both the extract and a range of other topics to express a point of view.

The completed written response can be used as an assessment piece.
