This resource is a 4 day plan that involves children planning and budgeting for their own Firework display. You can do it as a lead up to Bonfire night or do it afterwards, getting children to think about next year. It first looks at some problem solving using Battersea Fireworks as an example. It works best to have mixed ability groups of 3-6 children (a computer/tablet per group is very useful) and encompasses lots of different maths number, calculation and problem solving skills as well as highlighting the use of ICT and presentation skills. There are options throughout the task to make it more challenging by having last minute sales etc depending on how each group is working.
This was used as a series of lessons in an overseas inspection lesson last year but can be easily adapted to use UK or any other country (just change links to local ones i.e. use .co.uk instead of .gr and change euros to pounds etc). It works particularly well if you have completed any spreadsheet work previously as they can use known formulae to lighten their workload.
