This is an engaging resource exploring Dickens’ concepts of Ignorance and Want as allegories of Victorian society.

Students will look deeper into what society was like for the poor and incorporate the ideas into their own piece of writing to expand on the contextual background of ‘A Christmas Carol.’ By reading through extracts, highlighting activities, filling in the blanks, students will have a solid understanding of the characters of Ignorance and Want. They will use a modeled paragraph and label the evidence and inferences made. They will write and peer-assess independent writing throughout the lesson and build new vocabulary in their writing. Students will explore poverty in the Victorian age and the divide between the rich and the poor to better understand Ignorance and Want. An audio reading will engage students whilst they annotate their extracts to show how Scrooge portrays his ignorance through the characters of Ignorance and Want.

Includes:

  • Animated PowerPoint presentation of 18 slides
  • Printable model paragraph for labeling activity
  • Printable extract for highlighting activity
