A coastal erosion study - The case of the disappearing Apostle -Australia

The are a number of sea stacks along the coastal area of Victoria. Hundreds of years ago there were most likely several dozens but over time weathering and erosion have reduced the numbers. The current number of eight - or maybe nine if you include a pile of limestone rocks - have been called “The Twelve Apostles”.
This study explains why the numbers have been declining. Through map, diagrams and explanation take your students to this area to see why one of the apostles disappeared recently. Its part of a series of recent events showing why
the limestone coastal areas have experienced erosion. This study can be linked with the units entitled “London Bridge has fallen down” and “The disastrous wreck of the Loch Ard clipper ship” - a piece of colonial history. The summary activity will provide a check on the level of understanding.
