This unit explores the Arafura Swamp - largest but little known swampland of Australia. It can stand alone as a study of ecology/ecosystems/feral invasions and conservation need. It can also link with other units in the Arnhem Land series. This units begins by showing the extent and seasonal fluctuation of water levels in the swamp. It then (by description and photographs) takes students into and onto the swamp land to discover what is there. For centuries this swampland has been a treasure house for local Aboriginal people hunting and gathering survival food resources. The remoteness of the Arafura Swamp has not kept it safe from intruding animals (cane toad, water buffalo and pigs) which have invaded the area. These feral animals have had an impact on the natural ecology (plants and animals) and along with the spread of a weed (mimosa pigra) have prompted the need for conservation. The final 3 pages are given as attachments so that students can be provided with questions/activities to test the level of their understanding. Enjoy the journey into the swamp but watch out for saltwater crocodiles!
