This three-page worksheet helps students understand and analyse Dudley Randall’s evocative poem ‘Ballad of Birmingham’. The worksheet begins with some comprehension questions, before moving into questions on the purpose, form and themes of the text. This is followed by analysis of a range of techniques in the poem such as connotations, symbolism and rhetorical questions. A matching exercise also highlights the range of other techniques evident in the poem. Finally, a workbook task provides a focus question so that students can expand on their learning in extended written form.

The worksheet is included in both pdf and Word formats for flexibility, and there is an answer key for the matching activity.
