Biro/ballpoint pen portrait, SOW and LP (prison education)

This workbook focuses mainly on creating art using very limited resources, in this case a simple and basic biro pen. You will study a step-by-step guide on creating sellable, professional quality portraits using the authors personal step by step process. This workbook focuses on the use of the grid technique and so is suitable for learners of all levels, regardless of artistic background. The workbook also has a strong focus on issues surrounding equality and diversity and the promotion of different cultures including issues relating to BAME (Black, Asian and Ethnic Minorities). The workbook also introduces the concept of surrealism and how the creation and development of this can be applied to your own culture, heritage and background and how you can use this as inspiration for future artwork.
This workbook was developed to promote the ongoing study of art for learners who either are in or will be released from prison. Due to the nature of personal finances upon leaving prison, the workbook was created to fully promote the ongoing study of art, in or out of prison for persons with a limited budget or financial hardship. Working in biro pen produces a very dynamic contrast of dark and light, a principle which it referred to regularly throughout the book, creating transferable skills which can be applied to many different areas of art and design.
This workbook has been and continues to be utilised in a prison setting to support learners with both extensive and little artistic background or experience. Results have been extremely positive as the workbook encourages learners to try techniques that have previously not been considered. The workbook was created to allow learners to continue to work in-cell at a time when face to face teaching has not been allowed.
This workbook has also become a benchmark for quality assurance processes and guidelines within the organisation.
Whilst the workbook has been designed for prison education, it is fully able to be used and applied in other areas. Specifically, areas focusing on learners with specific LDD needs such as the autism spectrum, where focus and repetition can be utilised in a positive way. The workbook also acts as a good support mechanism for mindfulness and wellbeing.
