Pupils can use the sheet to construct a branching key. The 8 aliens depicted vary in the number of legs and antennae they have, and in their body shape. The exercise is made easy by the fact that pupils can look at the characteristics in any order, and the key will still work out so that each individual can be identified by a unique set of characteristics. The drawing itself is basic to say the least, and if anyone wants to make it look a bit more sophisticated I’d be glad of a copy. But it works really well. It was used in several Scottish first year classes studying Ecosystems.

Excellent resource! I produced a powerpoint to be used alongside this giving the pupils the role of "the extra-terrestrial communication team" - their goal was to produce a branched key to allow humans to easily identify the aliens - the aliens then "took photos" of animals and "asked" the pupils to produce a branched key to allow them to identify animals from earth - every class love the alien names!

Saves time coming up with simpler ideas for pupils to group before getting into classification of organisms.
