Explain the definition of squatter settlements with reference to favelas, bustees, slums and shanty towns (slide 1). Discuss the location of favelas within Rio, explaining the reasons for why they have developed in specific locations in the city (slide 4). Expand further by explaining the causal factors for why favelas have grown in size and numbers over time. Introduce Rocinha as the case study example.
Whilst watching the clip of Rocinha, pupils create a spider diagram identifying everyday challenges faced by residents of the favela. Recap the main challenges for Rocinha residents (slides 10-17) pupils can add additional detail to their spider diagram. Pupils answer a short GCSE question, with reference to the photograph (slide 18).
Independently, pupils refer to pages 160-161 to complete the handout of the five main challenges of living in a squatter settlement (health, services, unemployment, crime, construction). An extension task is available for pupils to assess the opportunities and challenges for slum dwellers (slide 21).
Pupils are required to answer a GCSE practice question based on the learning of this lesson, show a model example to the class (slide 22).
