Chemistry workbook for age 16+ on Mass Spectrometry.
Learning objectives are operation, description of the stages and calculation of relative atomic mass from isotope abundance data.
There are 3 full exercise with answers to support the 3 learning objectives.
Exercise 1 asks students to reorganise a list of steps of the operational steps of the MS, which forces them to think about each stage and to re-write the basics of each step to enhance their understanding. There are notes and a labelled diagram at the front of the workbook to help them with this exercise.
Exercise 2 asks questions on the details of the operational steps, chosen from typical exam questions.
Exercise 3 on calculation of relative atomic mass gives students plenty of practice with their calculators, they generally find this difficult so this exercise was designed to address this need.
The whole workbook should take around 2 hours, but this may be less for more-able students.
Generally this topic is easy marks for students but they rarely take it seriously, so I designed the workbook for my own students to get them to focus on it and secure these easy marks, which they have !!
