A lesson that focuses on the poem ‘Before the Sun’ by Charles Mungoshi, and aims to develop personal interpretation, annotation confidence and close analysis skills.

The slides include:

  • modelled annotations by stanza
  • individual and group discussion tasks
  • an analysis grid that connects the poet’s choices to wider, thematic ideas
  • guiding questions on language, form and structural features.

Suitable for use as a standalone lesson or to support an existing SoL as part of the CIE 0475 Literature Poetry Anthology. Originally taught to a Year 10, class but this lesson could also be adapted for Year 11 revision.

Please note the activities here were originally planned for an 80 minute lesson.
