COMPONENT 1, SECTION A EDUQAS GCSE : NEWSPAPERS PARTYGATE 2024 ONWARDS (MEDIA LANG)

Lesson 1-4: This lesson begins a unit of 18 lessons on ‘The Sun’ and ‘The Guardian’ newspapers and their covergae of Patygate (NEW 2024 ONWARDS SET TEXTS). This lesson focuses on Media Language and covers:

-Recapping what is and isn’t Media Language
-Context -What was Partygate?
-Brief overview of ‘The Sun’ and ‘The Guardian’
-Labeling of unseen texts against all Newspaper cover terminology needed.
-Red-tops, tabloids, broadsheets and Berliners.
-Iconography and an analysis of ‘The Sun’ front cover.
-Construction of news front covers and Partygate.
-Mise-en-scene
-Codes and conventions. Create a brainstorm for both Tabloids and Broadsheets. Set each out as above. What are their codes and conventions?
-Mode of address
-Anti-Elitist, nationalism and populism.
-Application of Hall’s reception theory and active learning task.
-Annotation and deconstruction task of both newspapers.

IMPORTANT: This resource includes notes at the bottom of select power point slides to aid teachers, links, resource sheets and printable resource slides and a H/W task.

NOTE: I am following EDUQAS Teaching Model 1 in my teaching/ SOW. Each lesson is laid out as I teach my own class but I have added notes at the bottom of some of the slides e.g. on the Media Teaser, to aide teachers. All lessons are developed with differentiation, assessment/challenge as well as engagement entrenched heavily within all my resources. Moreover, constant reference is made throughout to the selected Examiner Media.
