Dis Jesus ever call himself God?
Not directly but he used the following statements:
“For unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins”
“Before Abraham was, I am”.
“I and the Father are one.”
The Seven I am statements in John’s Gospel
- “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6:35).
- “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12).
- “I am the door” I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture” (John 10:7-9).
- “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep…I am the good shepherd; and I know my sheep, and am known by My own.” (John 10:11, 14).
- “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live” (John 11:25).
- “ I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).
- “I am the true vine , you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:1-5).
Why are these statements important?
Jesus was letting the first century Jews, who were familiar with God’s definition of Himself (“I am that I am”), know that He truly was God incarnate (in human form).
