This resource is for KS4 students. It consists of a lesson presentation and worksheet. The lesson presentation includes a starter and worked solutions to the worksheet.
The purpose of the lesson is to give students an understanding of directly and inversely proportional relationships and an understanding of the difference between them. (The lesson does not consider relationships where y is directly or inversely proportional to a power of x). The lesson starts with an example of both types of relationship and also a relationship that is neither. The students learn how to identify the type of relationship or absence of either from the corresponding values for the variables. The worksheet asks the students to do this for 8 different cases, before posing several real-life situations and asking the students to identify the type of proportionality.
