This lesson focuses on how energy can be transferred between stores when a system changes. This is based on the new AQA Trilogy specification.

Lesson includes:
Powerpoint with lesson objective, success criteria and accompanying tasks.

The energy systems expert information contains visual, worked examples of how energy is transferred from store to store.

I allocated one person on each table to become an expert. Each student has a prop to match their information sheet (microwave, wind up toy, tennis ball, book, elastic band, pendulum, bunsen burner, battery powered torch). Their role is to teach each group that circulates to them how energy is transferred in their particular example and to get them to draw an energy transfer diagram.

The energy transfer experts sheet is to be printed A3 and completed by the students visiting each expert. The table contains a section to record notes, draw an energy transfer diagram and give feedback to their expert.

I followed the activity up with a short quiz to assess learning and gave a prize to the highest rated teacher.

This activity worked extremely well with my high ability year 8 class.

A good resource for getting students to understand the difference between stores of energy and energy transfer
