Engaging series of lessons exploring the language of Kanye West’s ‘Hey Mama’ and Eminem’s ‘Headlights’- looking at how each rapper’s relationship with their mum is revealed through the language, structure and tone of the rap.
I included a spin-off transactional task for each as well, considering the mums’ perspectives and asking the students to write 1. A verse from Donda’s perspective in response to Hey Mama, 2. A letter from Debbie Mathers to Eminem. Some cultural capital in there too- references/links to Desert Storm, Forrest Gump, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni etc.
Fab spin off for KS3 love and relationship poetry - useful for KS4 unseen as well.
