This lesson allows KS3 students to consider the themes, language and structure of a non-fiction text considering and comparing texts from the Refugee Council and the UNHCR on the topic of refugees. The extracts are approached on a step by step basis, making the resource suitable for KS3 students beginning GCSE style studies or weaker KS4 students who find non-fiction texts challenging. The subject matter is controversial and thought provoking allowing students to apply prior knowledge and context to the material. The resource can easily be adapted to suit the criteria of GCSE exam board. The texts challenge stereotypical viewpoints so could be used as PSHE resources on the subject of prejudice.
