This is a matching pairs/memory game of 7 pairs of homophones (words that sound the same but are spelled differently). It’s ideal as a warmer activity or a 5-10 minute filler activity and is suitable for Entry Level/Beginner/A2 learners.

The cards can be used in pair work, 1-1 tuition or small groups with the learners putting the cards face down and then turning them over in pairs to find a matching pair. Alternatively the cards could be used for literacy practice with the teacher showing the picture and the learners writing the correct spelling.

More advanced learners could write their own short stories using the words or write gap fill stories for their classmates to complete with the correct words.

The activity could also be used as a spring board to brainstorm other homophones.
