The aim of this project is to introduce students to the concept of energy transfers by conducting a simple experiment. The project allows students to observe the transfer of energy from a charged balloon to a light bulb, and to consider the different forms that energy can take. This will help them understand the basic principles of energy transfer and conservation. The aim of second part of the project is to introduce students to the concept of energy transfers and energy efficiency through the example of thermal energy transfer by convection. By conducting a simple experiment with a pot of boiling water and a metal spoon, students will be able to observe how thermal energy is transferred from the hot water to the spoon by conduction and convection. This will help them understand how different materials conduct heat differently and how the design of a system can affect the efficiency of the energy transfer. Additionally, by researching about and discussing about how to improve the energy transfer will give them a sense of how to approach similar scenarios in real life.

A research project to give students before embarking upon the unit, or to run along-side the unit as independent learning. Although this was designed for those studying the Exploring Science curriculum, they can be used alongside other curriculums also.

Giving the pupils this project before teaching the unit can help them gain a better understanding of the material and can help them become more engaged in the learning process. It can also help them develop critical thinking skills and can help them become more independent learners.
